View Full DescriptionIntroduced in 1993, the Thunderbird became an instant classic with the help of visionary designer Ray Dietrich. Today's Thunderbird IV, with its huge thunderous sound, is still a benchmark for innovation, functionality and style - continuing Gibson's lead in guitar manufacturing.
The Thunderbird's multiple-wood-ply construction is structurally and aesthetically innovative. Maximum wood-to-wood contact is achieved by gluing the neck, centrepiece and two wings together which results in a better tone, sustain and high-quality alignment.
Like every Gibson headstock, it is carved from the same material as the neck. The carefully set angle of 14 degrees accommodates the radical contour of the headstock and keeps pressure on the strings, so there is no loss of vibration.
Black chrome-plated Grover bass tuners allow for comfortable access and uncomplicated tuning.
The rounded bass neck profile is based on the more modern, slim-tapered necks most commonly associated with the Les Paul and SG models on the early 60s. Almost completely made by hand, no two necks have the exact same dimensions, yet each Thunderbird IV Bass has the same distinct traditional feel.
Two vintage-style TB Plus humbuckers are traditional hum-cancelling bass pickups with ceramic magnets, producing a full-frequency, heavy-bottom sounds and delivering the huge, powerful bass tone the Thunderbird IV is reknowned for.
Providing players with the ability to adjust and fine-tune the height of the bass strings is the three-way adjustable 'floating' bridge. Allowing you to equip the Thunderbird with a variety of string guages and setups, the bridge has readily accessible screws to make adjustment unproblematic, and has remained an industry standard in bass guitar bridge design.
